Launch of Falso platform

Joint Press Statement

Tripoli, 4 May 2020

On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day and in partnership with the German Embassy to Libya, the Libyan Center for Freedom of Press (LCFP) launched “Falso”, an online platform for monitoring hate speech and fake news in Libya.

“Falso” is a digital research platform committed to fact-based, independent journalism. It monitors and informs about journalistic content in Libya,  drawing attention to the destructive role played by hate speech and incitement to violence while combating rumors and misleading fake news. The first of its kind, “Falso” operates according to a research methodology based on the principles of fact-based and independent reporting, a key pillar of a free and open society.

At present, social media is frequently used to manipulate facts, spread rumors and circulate one-sided videos or images. Too often, journalism thus becomes a tool for disinformation and division, rather than contributing to fact-based information and dialogue within the Libyan public.

This partnership aims at promoting independent journalism and factual analysis as well as raising awareness about the importance of professional media ethics.
